Newer subdivisions such as the Groves at Baytree mostly have factory-built units; older houses may have brick fireplaces, and manufactured homes use listed units. Lakefront homes take wind-driven rain off the water, and wet soot on the smoke shelf or damper is a common source of smells that cleaning fixes.
Beyond a routine sweep
A routine sweep brushes the flue. A deep cleaning follows the whole smoke path: the firebox, the damper, the smoke shelf behind it, the smoke chamber above it and the flue to the top. In a masonry fireplace that means the brick smoke chamber and smoke shelf as well as the clay flue. In a factory-built unit there is no masonry smoke chamber, so the work centers on the metal flue, the refractory panels and the cap screen.
